The acrimonious end to trainer Ramesh Powar’s tenure split the women’s cricket team with T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana on Monday demanding his return regardless of senior player Mithali Raj’s fallout with him.
Committee of Administrators (COA) chairman Vinod Rai told PTI the Harmanpreet and Smriti, in a letter, have supported Powar to keep as coach till 2021. Powar’s interim tenure ended on November 30 and the BCCI has already invited fresh applications for your job. Powar is totally free to re-apply. Although Harmanpreet and Smriti are for Powar’s expansion, it’s discovered that Ekta Bisht and Mansi Joshi are against his reinstatement along with ODI captain Mithali.
The conclusion was completely predicated on cricketing logic and observations from the past. Keeping in mind that the requirement of the hour me, Smriti, the selector (Sudha Shah) and the trainer together in the existence of our supervisor felt that we need to go ahead with the winning combination. And I feel it ought to have come to your understanding that the intent was not personal but entirely predicated on the welfare of the team.”
Assuming that Mithali’s omission from the semifinal was a decision taken with the coach, captain, vice-captain and selector on tour and completely for cricketing reasons, Harmanpreet commended Powar for carrying the team ahead in a brief time.
“Sir Ramesh Powar not just improved us as players but did motivate us to establish goals and challenge our own limitations.
“How he’s changed us as a team, I feel no reason to replace him with any better at this point in time once the team is coordinating well with him and one of each other. It takes some time to understand and select combinations and equate having a trainer’s temperament. Another change of coach will influence our growth and we’ll have to begin from scratch,” Harmanpreet concluded.
Powar can apply afresh to your job, but in the light of recent controversies, the Board is not likely to pitch for him again. But with both senior players voicing their support for him, it remains to be seen how the BCCI goes on making its next appointment.
