The prime minister, who reached Dibrugarh in the afternoon in New Delhi, flew straight to Bogibeel at a chopper and committed the 4.94-km-long double-decker bridge to the country by the south bank of the river.
After inaugurating the bridge, the Prime Minister flagged off the Tinsukia-Naharlagun Intercity Express, which will run five days a week and use the 4.9-km bridge to decrease the train-travel time between Tinsukia from Assam into Naharlagun town of Arunachal Pradesh by more than 10 hours. How Bogibeel bridge will help strengthen India’s defense on China border
“The bridge will enhance the national security of the eastern region by facilitating the swift motion of defense forces and their gear. It was constructed in such a way that even a fighter jet can land on it in case of emergency,” a source said.
A senior Army official had earlier said the biggest advantage of this bridge would be an easy movement of troops from southern to the northern lender.
“This usually means travel to the farthest point of India’s border with China is going to be shortened by a few hundred km,” he’d said.
China has been putting new streets and improving its overall infrastructure along the nearly 4,000 km long border with India.
