Today, Google is celebrating what would have become the 111th birthday of Lev Davidovich Landau using a special Doodle. Lev Landau co-discovered the density matrix method in quantum mechanics, theory of second-order phase transitions, the theory of Fermi liquid, the Ginzburg-Landau concept of superconductivity amongst others. 

Lev Landau was a Soviet theoretical physicist, best known for winning the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics. 

Google’s Doodle features a cartoon of Landau along with a diagram, demonstrating his study to liquid helium’s behavior at extremely low temperatures. 

Who had been Lev Landau? 

Landau was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, on January 22, 1908. 

He loved maths and science from a young age, and amazingly, completed his research by the age of just 13. 

Lev Landau was a Soviet physicist who produced a number of the most significant discoveries in physics throughout the 20th century. 

Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, on this day in 1908, Landau was a child prodigy brilliant at mathematics and science but struggled in about his classmates. He completed his studies by the age of 13 and was prepared to begin college much before his classmates who clarified Landau as a”quiet, shy boy” in college. His father was an engineer with an oil firm and his mother a physician. 

Despite being considerably younger than his peers, Landau registered in the Physics Department of Leningrad University straight from school. 

Incredibly, Landau published his first book, On the Theory of the Spectra of Diatomic Molecules, at the age of just 18. 

Having finished his Ph.D. at age 21, Landau earned a Rockefeller fellowship along with a Soviet stipend which allowed him to visit research centers in Zurich, Cambridge, and Copenhagen, in which he had the opportunity to research with Nobel Laureate Niels Bohr. Famous for his work in quantum theory, Bohr had a deep impact on his or her mind.
