Overwatch has gifted players five free Winter Loot Boxes as part of its Winter Wonderland event that is going on now.
All you need to do is turn the match and you’re going to be alerted that you’ve got five boxes to start. The boxes are attached to Overwatch’s annual Winter Wonderland event. The contents consist of new sprays, emotes, success lines, and infrequent skins. The skin everyone is talking about is Junkrat’s Krampus look, which we’ll put you back 3,000 gold if you don’t get it in a box.
Five free loot boxes were not listed in the event particulars Blizzard shared back as soon as the event started, but based on an in-game pop-up that looks when players log in, the loot boxes appear to be a “thank you” present from Blizzard.
“Heroes, it’s been an eventful and wonderful season, and we wanted to have some time to thank you for being part of it,” the in-game message said. “We couldn’t have completed this without the enormous support, enthusiasm, and excitement that you have revealed for Overwatch. In the entire Blizzard group, we wish you and yours the very best and look forward to spending an exciting new year with you!”

No end date or period was given for the advertising, so it’s unknown how long players have to log in the game and gather their free loot boxes. The Winter Wonderland event is scheduled to finish on January 2nd however, so logging before then until more info is known would be a safe bet to make sure the loot boxes are obtained.
“The new seasonal items can be found in Winter Loot Boxes filled with new skins, emotes, highlights, player icons, sprays, voice lines, and much more,” Blizzard said concerning the loot boxes. “You may also buy things you missed from last year’s event with credits at a discount. But don’t wait too long–those Loot Boxes will vanish faster than holiday desserts”
